Teaching Philosophy
I believe in fostering a classroom culture built on trust and democracy. I get to know my students as people and our class is a community. We develop meaningful relationships through class meetings and friendly encounters. We build trust through positive encounters in academics and good citizenship. My students feel welcome and comfortable in our classroom. They feel confident in taking risks, being creative, and expressing their thoughts and ideas. Students are the heart of this learning community whereas I am the facilitator of learning events. Student growth is maximized when students are aware of their progression towards learning goals. This is synonymous with the current movement towards proficiency-based learning in the field of education. I encourage my students to monitor their own learning and assessment and we become partners in their progression towards proficiency in the standards. Through individual conferences, I assume the role of coach as we discuss what they have learned and set new goals together. Students gain a sense of ownership in and responsibility for their learning, which I believe, fosters a growth mindset. My practice is based in theories of Constructivism and brain research. I teach using a variety of instructional strategies that provide opportunities for active learning and collaboration. My greatest strength as a teacher is planning for interdisciplinary connections throughout the curriculum. Research suggests this fortifies neural connections as students create and modify their concepts of knowledge. I regularly revise, adapt, and modify my lessons and teaching approach relative to students’ needs and interests. I am perpetually fascinated by the world, making connections, and looking at things from varying perspectives. I am passionate about learning and understanding. I believe this is what makes me a creative educator. This portfolio aims to show who I am all around as a teacher. It includes Gen Ed as well as Art Ed based on my experiences as both. I am passionate about teaching regardless of what I teach!! I am certified in Maine for Gen Ed k-8 as well as Art k-12. I have been certified in Florida for Art k-12 and PreK-3rd Grade since 2009. |
