The assignment shown above was a pivotal moment in my understanding of assessment. On the left is a carefully written rubric intended for students to self-assess their understanding of the performance indicator. Prior to the assessment we engaged in an activity that highlighted the differences between Evaluation, Explanation, and Identification.
The image to the right shows the learning-assessing-feedback-learning dialogue that occurred between myself and my students. I realized here that assessment adds a unique layer of learning opportunity. By having this dialogue with students in the assessment process, the anxiety of 'getting it wrong' is diminished. Students become self-aware of their misconceptions and are able to re-adjust their thinking. |
