Simply stated, learners have differences and so should the instruction they receive be different.
Ability Grouping The most common strategy I use to differentiate instruction is ability grouping. Sometimes the format of the subject is already set up to use this strategy, such as when teaching ELA. Other times it is based on need, such as in social studies. Dictation Another strategy I use to differentiate instruction (as well as assessment) is in having individuals converse with me about a particular concept of the lesson. In some cases I dictated when their writing skills did not match their thinking skills. Knowing my students is paramount in effective differentiation! In getting to know my students I look at test data, administer surveys, and carefully observe their performance during activities and assignments. |
