Philosophy of Teaching Art
Art is everywhere - in the clothes we wear, books we read, buildings we live in (and everything in them). It comes from many different places - the desire to communicate, the need to improve our lives, and nature to name a few. I provide opportunities for students to observe, think, and feel; and then, I teach them ways to visually express their ideas.
Art is a universal language that spans time and place, unique to the human condition. It allows for personal communication and social connections. Through studying master artists, art movements, and worldly cultures, students develop a broader understanding of the world in which we live. In many ways, art supports students’ understanding across disciplines through powerful imagery that tells stories, elicits emotions, and sparks curiosity. Visual Art has a few basic rules in the Elements of Art and Principles of Design, yet has an infinite number of possible solutions. It is my job as an Elementary Art Teacher to teach children how to navigate this world of imagery and use the basic rules to effectively participate in it. By providing a studio space where students feel safe and comfortable, they can explore their creative side and reflect on personal experiences. In my Art Classroom you will find messy hands and the chatter of children talking about the work they are doing. You will see childrens’ artwork on the walls as well as exemplars of what they are learning about. You will find I CAN statements posted for each grade level as a reminder of the learning targets students are working on each week. My students take ownership of their learning over time through self reflection and personal goal setting. Throughout this process I coach - offering feedback and questions that push their thinking to a higher level, reminding them of the progress they’ve made over the years. I teach a variety of 2D and 3D art making processes. Each child finds his or her special medium that they excel in - leading to a lifelong journey in creating for expression, communication, and personal satisfaction. I cherish the role I play as an art teacher in forging personal relationships with every child in the school. I enjoy seeing them grow and mature over the years. I pride myself in contributing to the larger school community by participating in school wide events. Collaborating with grade level teachers to connect subjects is a special interest. Art is meant to be seen so I work tirelessly to display and honor the hard work of every child in the school. I do this through hanging art in the halls, hosting art shows on campus, seeking out opportunities to display student work in the community, and by building an online digital portfolio for each student. I am fascinated by the world in which we live, making connections, and looking at things from varying perspectives. I am passionate about learning and understanding. I believe this makes me a successful educator. Yes, I teach the Elements of Art and Principles of Design, but more importantly, I teach children to be creative thinkers and communicators.
