Learning Targets: what do I want my students to know, understand, or be able to do at the end of each lesson?
I CAN Statements: learning targets in student friendly language. Some districts require the Targets or I Can statements be posted in the room for students to see. I had I Can statements posted in my Art classroom in Florida. (See Left) In my 4th grade spring 2018 placement, I opted to share the targets with students using technology. I CAN statements were highlighted in a presentation for each lesson I wrote in Social Studies and Writing. (I did not use this format for Reading Street and EveryDay Math) What I like about the instructional approach of using Learning Targets and I CAN statements is that the lesson flows in a logical manner from conception to instructional delivery to instructional strategy to assessment.
